The Elite Edge: 📰 Your Interview Isn’t a Performance. It’s a Live Audit of How You Think. 🧠
Doing The Research For You.
Elite Edge | Vol 2 Week 16
Most candidates prepare for interviews the wrong way.
They memorize stories. They polish delivery. They try to sound impressive.
And they still don’t get the offer.
Because at the executive level, no one is hiring your answers.
They’re hiring your judgment.
And here’s what most people don’t realize…
I’ve sat on both sides of the table.
I’ve conducted over 50,000 interviews as an executive recruiter.
And I’ve been the candidate operating at senior levels, owning a $50M+ P&L, leading teams, and shaping markets in my last role.
Now at ZRG Partners, I see this dynamic even more clearly.
So instead of giving you generic advice, I’m going to show you how this actually works:
The questions you should expect
What I’m really evaluating
How to structure your answer
And real examples from my own experience
1. High-Stakes Decision in Ambiguity
Question to Expect:
Tell me about a time you had to make a high-stakes decision with incomplete information.
What I’m Evaluating:
Risk judgment. Speed vs precision. Ownership.
How to Answer (Framework):
Set the stakes
Show the ambiguity
Walk through your decision logic
Own the outcome
My Answer:
“In my last role, where I led a $50M+ business across fintech, AI, and data, we were operating in a market where demand was outpacing clarity. Clients wanted to hire ahead of the curve, but there were no benchmarks. I made the decision to move early, define roles alongside clients, and iterate based on outcomes rather than wait. It wasn’t perfect, but it positioned us ahead and built long-term credibility.”
Other Strong Angles:
Launching without full data
Entering a new market early
Making time-sensitive decisions
2. Disagreeing with Leadership
Question to Expect:
What’s a business decision you disagreed with, and how did you handle it?
What I’m Evaluating:
Emotional maturity. Influence. Business alignment.
How to Answer (Framework):
State the decision
Share your perspective without ego
Show how you influenced
Land on alignment
My Answer:
“In my last role, there was a push to standardize how we approached complex work. While I understood the goal, I believed it would reduce effectiveness in more nuanced areas. I brought data and outcomes into the conversation, showed where flexibility drove better results, and we aligned on a hybrid approach.”
Other Strong Angles:
Challenging strategy
Influencing stakeholders
Navigating leadership alignment
3. Self-Awareness as a Leader
Question to Expect:
What would your team say is the hardest part about working with you?
What I’m Evaluating:
Self-awareness. Coachability. Ability to scale.
How to Answer (Framework):
Be specific
Show real feedback
Demonstrate adjustment
Tie to outcomes
My Answer:
“Earlier in my career, I moved fast and expected others to operate at the same pace, which created friction. As I scaled a $50M+ business, I learned to provide more context and clarity upfront, which allowed teams to operate more independently and at a higher level.”
Other Strong Angles:
Delegation
Speed vs alignment
Leadership evolution
4. Why This Role, Why Now
Question to Expect:
Why this role, and why now?
What I’m Evaluating:
Intentionality. Market awareness. Strategic fit.
How to Answer (Framework):
Anchor to their inflection point
Connect your experience
Show why now
My Answer:
“At this stage, I’m very intentional about where I spend my time. In my last role, I built and scaled a $50M+ business. When I was approached about ZRG Partners, I wasn’t actively interviewing, I was called directly by the CEO. But I still treated it like a business decision.
I made a clear case for how I would build and run a global executive search practice, and I was equally clear about what I wanted to continue building outside of it, specifically my media platform.
We aligned on both.
I knew the value I could create for ZRG, but I also knew what I was building independently, and both mattered. I would not have taken the role without that alignment.
That’s how I think about decisions at this level. It’s not just about the role. It’s about the structure and the long-term impact.”
Other Strong Angles:
Strategic career moves
Negotiated roles
Platform + operating alignment
5. Failure or Misstep
Question to Expect:
Tell me about a time something didn’t go as planned.
What I’m Evaluating:
Ownership. Pattern recognition. Growth.
How to Answer (Framework):
Be direct
Take ownership
Show what changed
Demonstrate improved judgment
My Answer:
“In my last role, I supported a senior placement that looked exceptional on paper, but I underestimated cultural and operating fit. When it didn’t work out, I took full ownership, stayed close to the client, and adjusted how I assess talent. I now place far more emphasis on operating style and alignment, not just credentials.”
Other Strong Angles:
Hiring mistakes
Strategy misfires
Missed timing
What Most People Miss
Most candidates answer the question.
Elite candidates answer what’s behind the question.
They don’t just tell me what happened. They show me how they think.
Because at this level, the real question is:
“Can you operate at the level we need?”
Corporate Truth
Most candidates prepare stories.
Elite candidates prepare perspective.
📚What I Read This Week…
This piece reinforces something I’ve been saying for months:
Layoffs aren’t always loud anymore. They’re targeted. Strategic. Quiet.
Companies are no longer cutting broadly. They’re reshaping the workforce with precision, often replacing layers with leaner, AI-augmented teams.
Which makes one thing very clear:
The bar for talent is going up. And how you think in moments like an interview matters more than ever.
📰 This one is a little personal
I was honored to be featured in Forbes this week in an article on how professionals are navigating one of the toughest job markets we’ve seen in years.
The piece captures something I’ve been saying for a long time:
The gap between qualified and hired is almost never about talent. It’s about knowing how the game actually works.
We’re in a market where:
Roles are fewer and more competitive
AI is reshaping expectations in real time
And the rules are changing faster than most people can keep up
That’s exactly why this work matters.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, overlooked, or unsure of your next move — you’re not alone. But you do need a different strategy.
Take a read. The conversation is just getting started.
