The Elite Edge: You Don't Need to Quit. You Need a Bridge. 🌉💰

Doing The Research For You.

Elite Edge | Vol 2 Week 33

The Bridge (W2 to First Dollar🤑💰)

Every week I get some version of the same message: "I want to build something outside my job, but I don't know where to start — and I definitely can't afford to quit."

Good. Don't quit.

You don't need a leap. You need a bridge — and most people never build one because they're waiting for a permission slip that isn't coming.

I've watched hundreds of people over 25 years try to go from "employee" to "something else" in one move — and almost all of them either burn out chasing a fantasy version of freedom, or stay stuck for years because the gap looks too big to cross. The people who actually make it across build a bridge in four stages. Quietly, on the side, while the W-2 is still paying the bills.

Stage 1: The Audit

Stop brainstorming "business ideas." Instead, ask: what do people already ask me for, off the clock, for free? The resume review. The "can I pick your brain" coffee. The Slack DM asking how you handled a tricky negotiation. That's not networking. That's unpriced demand. Your first offer is almost never a new idea — it's an existing pattern you haven't put a price on yet.

Stage 2: The Proof Project

Before you charge anyone real money, do one project — unpaid or steeply discounted — with a named outcome, for someone who is not your employer and not a direct competitor. The goal isn't income. It's evidence. "I've done this before" is the sentence that gets you your first paying client, and you can't say it honestly until you've done it once.

Stage 3: The First Paid Yes

Underprice it on purpose. The point of dollar one isn't margin — it's proof the transaction works: you can deliver, someone will pay, and the world doesn't end. Raise your price on client two, not client one.

WHY THIS WORKS: Most people price their first client like it's their tenth. Then they get one "no" and decide the whole idea was wrong. Price low enough that a "yes" is easy, and you're testing the real variable — will people pay for this at all — instead of testing your negotiation skills before you have any data.

Stage 4: The Quiet Infrastructure

Once money is real, protect it: a simple LLC or sole-proprietor setup, an invoice template you don't have to build from scratch every time, and a calendar boundary — no client calls during work hours, full stop. And before any of this: actually read your employment agreement. Most standard agreements restrict competing with your employer or using their time, equipment, or confidential information — not having outside income altogether. Know the difference before you assume either way.

The burning question I get every time I talk about this

"Is this even legal while I'm still employed?" — In most cases, yes, with guardrails. The two things that get people in trouble aren't "having a side business." It's (1) directly competing with their employer, and (2) using employer time, tools, or client relationships to build it. Outside of that, most agreements are narrower than people assume. Read yours. Don't guess.

🧭 THE PORTFOLIO CAREER DIAGNOSTIC

Should I Even Do a Portfolio Career?

Before you leap, ask yourself:

1. Clarity + Market Fit

  • What ONE outcome do people already trust me to deliver?

  • What problem can I confidently solve in 30 days or less?

  • What proof do I have?

  • What are my wins, metrics, receipts, testimonials, and evidence?

2. Risk + Timing

  • How many months of runway do I have — financially and emotionally?

  • Am I trying to build this from panic or from power?

  • What is my Minimum Viable Portfolio?

    • One client.

    • One offer.

    • One channel.

3. Energy + Identity

  • Do I actually want freedom — or do I just want out of my current job?

  • What work energizes me enough that I would want to do it without a title attached?

  • What boundaries am I willing to hold around scope, hours, and access?

4. Practical Setup

  • Do I understand enough about business structure and taxes to know when to bring in a CPA or attorney?

  • What is my plan for health insurance, retirement, and time off?

  • What is on my “NO” list?

  • How will I prevent myself from becoming a freelancer with a new boss every week?

If you read through that list and thought “this isn’t just me” — that’s the point. This is a market shift, not a personal crisis. You’re not a person searching for a job. You’re a professional with expertise that can be packaged around problems and outcomes.

Want to double-click on any of this? I run a live webinar on portfolio careers where we go deeper on exactly the parts people get stuck on: how to actually set things up, how to price yourself, what lanes you can open, how to put together the right artifacts without ever needing a website, and how to get started this month, not “someday.” My next one is coming up — you should be in the room for it.

ELITE TOOLS, HACKS & TIPS (New)

AI Tool of the Week

AI Tool of the Week: Claudehttps://claude.ai

I get asked constantly how I actually put this newsletter together every week, so here’s the honest answer: Claude has become part of my research process, not just a writing tool.

  • Fact-checking before it goes out. Anything I claim about employment law, monitoring rights, or market data — like the state-by-state password laws in a few weeks — I run through Claude with web search on, so I’m citing something current, not something I half-remember from three years ago.

  • Turning a messy voice memo into a framework. Half of what you read here starts as me rambling into my phone after a client call. I hand that to Claude and ask it to find the structure — stages, lanes, a diagnostic — rather than starting from a blank page.

  • Stress-testing the argument, not just the grammar. Before an issue goes out, I ask Claude to poke holes in it: where’s the claim too broad, where am I missing the counterpoint, where would a skeptical reader push back. That’s the edit that actually matters.

If you’re thinking about your own bridge, here’s a prompt you can copy straight into Claude to start finding yours:

I want to find my potential portfolio career bridge — something I could realistically build alongside my current full-time job. Here’s my background: [paste a quick summary of your role, industry, years of experience, and 2–3 things you’re genuinely good at].Ask me questions one at a time to help me identify: (1) the ONE outcome people already trust me to deliver without being asked twice, (2) a problem tied to that outcome I could solve for someone else in 30 days or less, (3) who has likely already asked me for this kind of help informally — for free, (4) which of the five portfolio lanes (consulting, advisory, fractional, project-based, or digital products) best fits my personality, network, and risk tolerance right now, and (5) what my Minimum Viable Portfolio would look like — one client, one offer, one channel. Push back on vague answers and ask me to get specific.

Paste your real background in, let it interview you, and don’t smooth over the awkward answers — those are usually where the actual bridge is hiding.

📚What I Read This Week…

This week’s read isn’t about portfolio careers directly — it’s about why proof is about to matter more than ever. WSJ’s yearlong investigation traces a North Korean cell that applied to over 1,000 U.S. companies in three months, using AI to fake resumes, ace interviews, and even swap faces on video calls, funneling salaries back to fund the regime.

Worth a read before you assume “remote and verified” means what it used to — the fallout from this is coming for how every one of us gets hired and vetted going forward.
