The Elite Edge: Portfolio Career Isn’t One Thing. Pick the Wrong Lane and You’ll Burn Out for Nothing. 🛣️
Doing The Research For You.
Elite Edge | Vol 2 Week 34
Last week I talked about building the bridge off your W-2. This week: the part almost nobody explains before they jump in.
“Portfolio career” isn’t one path. It’s five very different businesses wearing the same trendy name — and most people pick blind.
I see this constantly: someone decides they want “a portfolio career,” reads one LinkedIn post, and starts doing whatever that post described — without knowing it was only one of five completely different lanes, with different timelines, different income shapes, and different lives attached to them.
The Five Lanes
1. Consulting
Paid for your time and expertise on a defined project. Fastest lane to first dollar — often weeks, not months — because you’re monetizing a skill people already know you have. Best for people with an established name or track record in their industry. The tradeoff: income is capped by your hours, same as employment, just at a higher rate.
2. Advisory
Ongoing strategic input — board seats, advisory retainers, sometimes equity instead of cash. Slowest lane to start because it runs almost entirely on existing relationships and reputation; you can’t cold-pitch your way into most advisory seats. Best for former operators and executives with a network already built.
3. Fractional
A part-time embedded leadership role — fractional CMO, CHRO, CFO. The most structured lane: regular hours, regular check-ins, closer to a part-time job than freelance work. Best for people who want the steadiness of employment without the full-time commitment.
4. Project-Based
Scoped deliverables, in and out — a launch, a report, a system build. The most varied lane, good for people who want different problems every few months and don’t want the ongoing-relationship management that comes with retainers. The tradeoff: you’re always sourcing the next project.
5. Digital Products
Templates, courses, frameworks — built once, sold repeatedly, no live delivery required. Slowest lane to build, fastest to scale once it exists — but it requires an audience or genuinely repeatable IP before it works at all. This is the lane people jump to first because it sounds like “passive income,” and the one most likely to disappoint someone who skipped lanes 1–4.
WHY THIS WORKS (or doesn’t): Every one of these lanes starts differently. Consulting and project-based work usually start with a former colleague or former boss. Advisory starts with your existing network — full stop. Fractional roles often come through a placement network or referral. Digital products need an audience first. If you don’t know where your first client for your chosen lane is actually going to come from, that’s the tell you picked the lane because it sounded good, not because it fit what you already have.
The burning question I get every time I talk about this
“Which lane should I start with?” — Start with whichever lane matches what you already have: a name in your industry → consulting. A deep network → advisory. A desire for structure → fractional. Variety → project-based. An audience → digital products.
Don’t pick the lane that sounds most impressive. Pick the one your current position already half-built for you.
Want to double-click on any of this? I run a live webinar on portfolio careers where we go deeper on exactly the parts people get stuck on: how to actually set things up, how to price yourself, what lanes you can open, how to put together the right artifacts without ever needing a website, and how to get started this month, not “someday.” My next one is coming up — you should be in the room for it.

✨ ELITE TOOLS, HACKS & TIPS (New) ✨
AI Hack of the Week: Build a One-Page Portfolio With Zero Website
By now, you should already have a free Claude account—so here’s my hack for you this week…
The most common objection I hear after someone picks a lane is “okay, but I don’t have anything to show anyone yet.” Here’s the fix, and it takes minutes, not weeks.
Use Claude Artifacts to generate a clean, single-page HTML site — your outcome, your proof points, a rate range, and a way to contact you — and it hands you back a live, shareable link on the spot. No Squarespace, no domain, no waiting.
It’s lane-specific. A consulting one-pager should read differently than a fractional one-pager. Regenerate it per lane in a few minutes and see which framing actually gets a response before you commit to one.
This is exactly what “the right artifacts without ever needing a website” means in my webinar — this hack makes that promise concrete instead of abstract.
Copy this into Claude to build yours:
Build me a single-page portfolio site as clean HTML. Here’s my background: [role, industry, years, 2–3 things I’m good at]. I’m testing the [consulting / fractional / project-based / advisory / digital products] lane. Include: the one outcome I deliver, 2–3 proof points, a simple rate range or engagement structure for this lane, and a clear way to contact me. Keep it to one page, no fluff.
Generate one per lane you’re considering and send the link the same day — don’t wait until it’s “perfect.”
📚What I Read This Week…
A little meta this week: one of the pieces I read was my own. 😄
In my latest Inc. column, I unpack the “invisible font” résumé hack candidates are using to game AI screeners—and why, after 25 years in recruiting, I don’t blame them.
My bigger point: when candidates have to learn how to outsmart an algorithm just to get seen by a human, we have to ask whether the problem is really the candidate—or the hiring system we’ve built.
Resourcefulness isn’t the problem. A hiring process that rewards gaming the machine over being qualified for the job is.
🎙️What I Listened to This Week… (Podcasts)
🎙️ I’VE BEEN MAKING THE PODCAST ROUNDS!
I just appeared on another podcast—this time with Kanika Chadda Gupta on That’s Total Mom Sense—and we had such a great conversation about what it really takes to stand out in today’s AI-driven job market.
We talked about what recruiters actually look for, personal branding, using AI as an advantage rather than fearing it, helping moms re-enter the workforce, and even what teenagers can start doing now to build their career capital.
If you’ve ever wondered, “How do I make sure I’m not getting overlooked?”—this episode is for you. 🎧 Add this one to your listening list this week!
